Membership Committee

Vice President:

The ideal candidate for this position should be someone who recognizes our union is stronger when we have an active and fulfilled membership. This person should also recognize that our membership includes individuals from four different generations and with diverse backgrounds and interests.

Committee Members:

Overview:

  • Educate our members about the purpose of our Union and encourage participation.
  • Organize social and recreation events for the promotion of goodwill amongst our members
  • Serve as a resources for all new employees and help decipher  our CBA and benefits
  • To seek out and share information that might be beneficial and/or of interest to our members
    • Online college degree programs
    • Available scholarships for college age children
    • Discount programs (possibly local)

Responsibilities:

Planning:

  • The committee should make it a priority to decide what type of events will be supported by the membership and put forth a budget and timeline for the year ahead.

Outreach:

  • Create a monthly newsletter capturing union related events, and/or news stories, post upcoming events, points of interest, educational topics (i.e. holiday pay, payroll deductions)
  • The committee should periodically survey the membership about various topics and establish a method for measuring satisfaction

Education

  • During the new recruit orientation, conduct a 30-45 minute presentation on the roles of the union within the fire department as well as the roles of the group stewards. Explain how the membership process work. 
  • Research and report on the history of the Local 108 highlighting milestones and setbacks
  • Structure of our organization, By-laws, committees,
  • Stewards
  • Labor laws

Social

  • New member reception
  • Group outings (ski trips, casino, comedy club, sporting events etc.)
  • Family picnic
  • Firefighters Ball
  • Holiday party

Color Guard

  • Florence/local parades
  • St Patrick's Day
  • Pipes and Drums
  • Benefits/Resources
